Do you struggle with maintaining healthy habits? Are you looking for a way to make changes that will last? If so, then you’re not alone. Creating healthy habits can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. In this blog, we’ll explore why it’s important to make the change today and how you can do it.
We all know that healthy habits are essential for leading a healthy lifestyle. But, why is it so important to make the change now? Studies have shown that developing healthy habits early on in life can have lasting effects into adulthood, which is something I’ve been super interested in learning more about since having Spencer. It’s wild what we learn as children, coming in with essentially a blank slate and taking in everything that’s modelled from the world around us.
Making the change today is important for another reason as well. Research has found that forming healthy habits is easier when it’s done gradually. This means that if you start making small changes today, you’re more likely to stick with them and see lasting results. So, how can you make the change today?
Here are some tips to get you started:
Start small and be consistent. This is one of the most wonderful elements of creating a new habit, to keep it simple and just show up. It takes so much pressure of you from having to perform every time to the expectation of what your goal embodies. You’ll be surprised how quickly you form a new habit when the passion to enjoy the outcome is part of your desires.
Choose one habit and focus on incorporating it into your daily routine. For example, if you want to start meditating, try setting up your meditation space the night before. Choose your guided mediation and have it pre-loaded into your phone so it’s ready to go.
Set realistic goals. For example, if you want to start exercising more, set a goal of exercising three times a week and something gentle like a walk or mat pilates where you’re getting into the habit of getting to a class or on your mat. That in itself is a huge achievement when you’re starting something new; showing up!
Find a support system. It can be helpful to have someone who can provide encouragement and motivation. This could be a friend, family member, or even an online support group (or me! I’m always here to be your cheer-buddy!!).
Reward yourself. Celebrating small victories can be a great way to stay motivated. We take so much for granted and rush from one thing to the next, so taking a moment to acknowledge what you’re doing for yourself is so important in making these new habits form a space in your daily life. It could be a physical reward like a massage, or just a little smile at yourself in the mirror for doing something you’re proud of. Something I’m learning deeply at the moment is that I have to cheer myself on before anyone else will. So, don’t let the perceived awkwardness of high-fiving yourself stop you from showing up and congratulating your wins – big or small!
Creating healthy habits doesn’t have to be difficult. With the right approach, you can make the change today and see lasting results. So, what are you waiting for? Make the change today and start creating healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
